WEST PLAINS, Mo. — West Plains Zizzer swimmers hit the water again on September 3 at 4 pm at the All-Relays meet at Foster Natatorium in Springfield.
This is the sixth season for boys swimming at West Plains High School and the third season for Head Coach Ryan Smith leading the team. The Zizzers only lost one senior from last year and so they return strong with seven veterans. Of those seven, six are All-Ozark Conference earners and three are state championship qualifying swimmers.
This year’s roster of nine includes seniors Dakota Sparks, Nate Bramwell, Jaxson Wood, Kyle Jolliff, and Jake Newberry; sophomores Jake Bramwell and Matthew Mayberry; and freshmen Isaac Kammerer and Ethan Squires.
The Zizzer boys come back from a solid 2018 season where they broke all but three school records. Sparks holds the current school records in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. Jolliff is the school record holder for the 100-yard breaststroke. Nate Bramwell ended last season on a high with a 57.60 state qualifying swim and the school record in the 100-yard butterfly.
Three of the Zizzer swimmers come into the high school season just out of summer USA club swimming. In June, Jake Bramwell earned a new personal best time in his strongest event, the 50-yard freestyle (25.24) and topped the summer season high-school aged boys points standings for Waves Swim Club. Mayberry saw significant time drops in the freestyle and backstroke events over the summer season and picked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle at Seymour mid-June. Incoming freshman and Waves Swim Club standout swimmer Isaac Kammerer clocked impressive times in over the summer, earning wins in both the 50-yard breaststroke and 50-yard butterfly in the 13-14 age division at area meets.
“I am very excited about the upcoming boys swim season,” says Coach Smith. “With seven returners, including five seniors and three MSHSAA State Qualifiers, the potential for this team is through the roof. I look forward to great results both as a team and individually at all the meets but especially Ozark Conference Championships, Southwest Missouri Championships, and MSHSAA State Championships.”
Although the team’s 2019 schedule features only away meets, West Plains will host two “home” multi-team duals at the Seymour YMCA on Thursday, September 5 and Thursday, October 10. Hopes are to host the season-opener Fall Classic Meet in West Plains again next season.
